What is Ryan’s Rally? In November of 2009 Ryan Diviney was a student at West Virginia University with the promise of a very bright future ahead of him.
Ryan prior to November 7, 2009
On November 7,2009, Ryan and his friends were walking near the WVU’s main campus on their way to get a snack after a party. In the parking lot of a local Dairy Mart, they passed some fellow students and an argument ensued over the World Series. Ryan was brutally beaten and left with severe brain damage and has been in a comatose state ever since.
Both students were arrested and convicted. One of the students was convicted of battery and sentence to one year in prison. He was recently released, in May of 2011, after serving his one year sentence. The second student was convicted of malicious assault and sentenced to two to ten years in prison. Thankfully his recent request for early release was denied.
The pair was also ordered to pay $100,000 in restitution to help cover the Diviney’s medical bills, of which , to date, nothing has been paid.
As you can imagine, with Ryan needing 24 hour care, the hardship on this family is enormous, both financially, as well as, emotionally!
